That’s always funny to hear this because of how many wealthy people live here…
But then I realize that the rich need the poor to stay rich…
Wherever there is poverty there will always be a few rich people around…
You find $5 million dollar homes on one street.. And low income housing on another street..
There is also gentrification going on in the once mostly black poor parts of the city… Housing projects are being torn down and replaced by expensive gated apartment complexes… So now instead of white flight from the inner city.. You see white flight from suburbs back into the increasingly expensive inner city.
Then factor in that Memphis is the most expensive city to fly into and out of in the country… Then you truly see how the poor are being fucked to the high heavens…
Poorest big city with the most expensive airport… The fuckery that is Memphis continues… And the leaders seem hell bent on maintaining this shit… No talk of bringing business to the city… No plan to invest in business thoughout the entire city… No plan to invest in the education of the overcrowded underfunded brown and black school districts. But the city is pouring 10’s of millions of dollars into a majority white majority middle class neighborhood of the city… The fuckery that is Memphis…
How do you mandate people to buy health insurance who can’t afford to buy health insurance currently??
Maybe there is a subsidy depending on income or something… If not this bill is dead in the water… I mean it’s problematic from the start but I guess something is better than nothing..

Our Civilian Government Feared Armed Revolt Over War Criminal Prosecution
Dean Chris Edley volunteered that he’d been party to very high-level discussions during Obama’s transition about prosecuting the criminals. He said they decided against it. I asked why. Two reasons: 1) it was thought that the CIA, NSA, and military would revolt, and 2) it was thought the [Republicans] would retaliate by blocking every piece of legislation they tried to move (which, of course, they’ve done anyhow).
Afterwards I told him that CIA friends confirmed that Obama would have been in danger, but I added that he bent over backwards to protect the criminals, and gave as an example the DOJ’s defense (state secrets) of Jeppesen (the rendition arm of Boeing) a few days after his inauguration.
He shrugged and said they will never be prosecuted, and that sometimes politics trumps rule of law.
“It must not,” I said.
“It shouldn’t,” he said, and walked off.

The extent of the influence of the military industrial complex doesn’t at all surprise me, but the fact that the President had to take his physical safety into account when making a decision whether or not to prosecute people who had clearly committed crimes shocks me to my core.

Yup, I’ve never had any doubt that multiple political factions have enlisted the massive pool of racist animosity and potential for violence that is always aimed at the first US black President to get their way in these kinds of matters. We still must concede he nonetheless has agency, but this is the world we live in. In conversation more than once, going back years, I’ve suggested that he’s no doubt been warned quite directly. PoC usually have no trouble understanding how this would happen. We know how (white) men with guns feel about brown, black, and golden men exerting authority.
